Polytan – Rekortan M at the Estadio de Atletismo Gran Tarajal, Fuerteventura, Spain
A professional pitch in the Canary Islands
With over 7,000 inhabitants, Gran Tarajal is the third-largest town on the island of Fuerteventura. The surroundings of Gran Tarajal are characterised by mountains of red lava rock. Temperatures there are mild all year round, earning the Canary Islands the nickname of “the islands of eternal spring”. However, due to constant strong winds and scarce precipitation, the climate is classified as “semi-arid”.
The Estadio de Atletismo Gran Tarajal, in the south of Fuerteventura, is one of only a few athletics stadiums on the island. There, sport enthusiasts can pursue a variety of athletics disciplines.
In 2023, the stadium was fully renovated, which not only included the replacement of the athletics track surface, but also the improvement of the long jump, triple jump, high jump and pole vaulting areas. Six running lanes, a sprinting track and the areas for the jumping disciplines were renewed with Rekortan M in brick red, our all-rounder for competitive tracks and training facilities in athletics. At the Estadio de Atletismo Gran Tarajal, the poured in-situ surface is primarily installed on the running tracks and run-up tracks.
Rekortan M is beloved by professionals and amateurs alike for its excellent acceleration and step elasticity, as well as by sports physicians for its high shock absorption and optimal transmission of force. In addition, the surface is extremely fast and ideal for record-breaking performances, making it an absolute professional among sports surfaces. The granules are sprinkled with a visible tip, making Rekortan M suitable for use with spikes.
Mayor Esther Hernández presented a clear argument for the renovation of the Estadio de Atletismo: “The athletics track of Gran Tarajal is in high demand, as it’s the only one in the south of the island and the only place where athletes can train. For this reason, it was a high priority for the municipal administration to improve it.”
Users of the facility also include students from the Instituto de Educación Secundaria (I.E.S.) Gran Tarajal. At Atletismo IES Gran Tarajal, they can not only train in their desired sport, but qualify as a “Sport Technician in Athletics”. This qualification is a requirement for working as a coach in the future. And naturally, the Estadio de Atletismo is also popular among recreational athletes who holiday on the island.
