Completed in autumn 2014 by Munich-based architects Bauer Kurz Stockburger & Partner, Gymnasium Grünwald was designed as an extensive campus offering far more than a conventional educational structure – including, for example, think-tanks, teamwork areas and student laboratories. The planning process also attached great importance to the sports facilities: pupils are now able to pursue numerous activities, both in the large indoor sports hall and in the open air. Among other things, sports surfaces from Polytan provide professional conditions for playing, training and competing in the outdoor area, which was designed by planners from Mahl-Gebhard, a Munich-based firm of landscape architects. The all-weather pitch and the circular track are covered with the Polytan S and Polytan WSS synthetic surfaces in reseda green, whilst the football and hockey pitch is fitted out with the multifunctional LigaGrass synthetic turf system. In order to make sure that the people living nearby are shielded as far as possible from the noise made by the athletes and spectators, the entire synthetic pitch and surrounding circular track, including the long jump, high jump and shot-put areas, were lowered by 3.5 metres.
