Rekortan PUR and Polytan SMART at Helmut-Körnig-Halle in Dortmund
Sports surfaces for all-year worldwide bests
The Helmut-Körnig-Halle in Dortmund is an enclosed sports arena, located on the “Strobelallee sports mile” – a stone’s throw from the Rote Erde stadium and the Westphalia stadium. It is a multifunctional event hall and serves as both the federal base and training centre for Westphalia Athletics. It is also used for many big events. As a national and international competition and training centre, it has capacity for 4,500 spectators. The hall has a 200-metre running circuit with six individual lanes, which encloses an eight-lane 60-metre sprint track, as well as separate throwing and jumping facilities. Extendable and retractable side stands also provide access to a 100-metre sprint track for training purposes.
In 2019, the City of Dortmund and the Olympic Training Centre of Westphalia decided to expand, renovate and optimise the Helmut-Körnig-Halle. While doing so, they paid special attention to the sprinting, hurdle, running, jumping and throwing disciplines. The running circuit, sprint track and run-up track for long jump and high jump inside the oval of the running track were fitted with our solid synthetic surface, Rekortan PUR Indoor in brick red, which satisfies the strict emission limit values for indoor spaces – making it ideal for indoor athletics facilities like the one in Dortmund. Thanks to its combination of an elastic base layer and a solid construction, the indoor variant of Rekortan PUR provides the perfect conditions for professional athletes and discerning amateurs alike. It also stands out for its excellent acceleration and step-elasticity characteristics. All other areas inside the oval are fitted with Rekortan PUR Indoor in reseda green.
Another long jump and sprint track outside the oval is equipped with Rekortan M Indoor in brick red, the classic among our solid synthetic surfaces, which has a track record of high speed and shock absorption, as well as excellent sport medical properties. The areas around the oval feature Rekortan M Indoor in reseda green.
The Helmut-Körnig-Halle is also equipped with the Polytan SMART system for the precise measurement and documentation of training performance. This allows athletes to conduct jumping tests, endurance tests and sprint tests, among other things. SMART timing gates are installed for this purpose in the running circuit, in the run-up tracks for long jump and high jump inside the oval, and in the 100-metre sprint training track.
In January 2024, spectators were in for a treat at the “Sparkassen Indoor Meeting”, which was held at the Helmut-Körnig-Halle Dortmund. There, believe it or not, they experienced five world bests for this year so far, including the surprising victory of Laura Raquel Müller in the women’s long jump, who stepped up her performance to an impressive 6.81 metres on our surface. Since last year, the talented long jumper and sprinter is also a brand ambassador for Polytan, not least because she also trains on our sports surfaces.
