Rekortan M in Caldas Da Rainha, Portugal
A splash of green amid the urban landscape
Caldas da Rainha – often referred to simply as “Caldas” by the locals – is located in the northwest of Portugal near the Atlantic coast. The city is known for its hot springs and ceramic pottery; the latter of which earned the city a place in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. When it comes to sport, the city places a strong emphasis on badminton; Caldas is home to the national training centre. But rugby also occupies an important place in the city. Both sports are practised and played at the Complexo Desportivo Municipal das Caldas, the local high-performance centre for sport.
This facility was only recently fully renovated and expanded. In the course of this renovation, we revamped the athletics track surrounding the rugby pitch and expanded the Pista de Atletismo das Caldas da Rainha from six to eight lanes. By doing so, we increased its capacity for both training and competition. The chosen surface was our Rekortan M in reseda green, which when viewed from above, makes the stadium look like a splash of green in the urban landscape of Caldas.
REKORTAN is our all-rounder for highly frequented athletics facilities – a water-permeable surface with a structured top layer for professional training and competition. The poured in-situ surface guarantees outstanding acceleration, speed and increased elasticity, as well as exceptional shock absorption that is valued by athletes and sports physicians alike.
Rekortan has been the proven classic among our synthetic surfaces for over 50 years and is recognised as a competition surface worldwide: it is the world’s most certified running track and around a quarter of all sports and training facilities are equipped with Rekortan. Its quality and professionalism were proven once more in 2024: in this year, 15 national championships were held on Rekortan surfaces, on which athletes from around the world were able to qualify for the pinnacle of athletics – the Olympic Games in Paris.
Another plus point of Rekortan is its robustness, as well as quick and easy installation. In the Rekortan M or Rekortan PUR version, this surface is also suitable for indoor athletics facilities, because it falls within the strict emission values for indoor spaces.
The operators of the Complexo Desportivo Municipal das Caldas da Rainha hope that their investment in the renovation of the facility, costing 400,000 euros, will deliver a modern and functional environment that will benefit both professional athletes and the local population.
