Polytan Rekortan RT and Tartan GOLD in the French Cherbourg-en-Cotentin region
An economic and sustainable solution
There are few cities in the world that have changed owner as often as Cherbourg. As a strategically important port city at the entrance to the English Channel, it was of interest to both the French and the English – to a certain extent, they were there hand in hand.
One of the city’s landmarks is La Rade de Cherbourg, which includes several developed port facilities as well as the world’s largest artificial roadstead for centuries, effectively an anchorage before the actual harbour.
Since 2016, the historic port of Cherbourg has been a district of the new central city of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, which also includes the municipality of Querqueville. The approximately 5,000 inhabitants can participate in sports at the Pierre Fernagu stadium, a football field that opened in 1982, including an athletics track with eight running lanes. The facility is used by the track and field athletes of AS Querqueville, who also practise jumping and throwing disciplines here. The club’s own athletics school for children between eight and eleven years of age particularly benefits from this. The turf is reserved for the football division of AS Querqueville.
A synthetic running track was installed in 1983, and renewed in 2005. In 2020, the eight lanes had to be repaired, and two of our products were used for the first time: Polytan Rekortan RT in brick red and Tartan GOLD. This project was co-financed by the council of the Department of Manche and Cherbourg-en-Cotentin.
With our re-topping systems, we offer professional solutions for worn-out running tracks and tracks in need of renovation – so old surfaces can be technically and visually renewed and made fit for optimal training and competition conditions. Polytan re-topping Systems are an extremely economical form of renovating athletics tracks, as the existing elastic substructures remain in place and thus have to be used sustainably rather than being disposed of. The installation of the old surface is independent of the construction method of the first installation. All of our re-topping surfaces are textured and suitable for spikes, and thus offer the optimal substrate for professional applications. At the Stade Pierre Fernagu, 6,300 m² were installed in brick red.
For the running tracks to the jumping pit, an additional 200 m² of Polytan Tartan GOLD have been installed. We have continuously developed this classic into a high-performance surface for top international sport. The combination of a full PU top layer and a cushioning levelling layer makes the Tartan GOLD extremely durable and ensures permanently good shock absorption values. Due to the interspersed granules in the wear layer, the surface is ideally suited for running shoes with spikes and offers extremely high acceleration. Its energy-boosting tread elasticity and high abrasion resistance round off this top quality surface.
