CLIENT: Treptow-Köpenick Municipal District Office
PLANNER/ARCHITECT: Ahner Landschaftsarchitektur

The initiators of Berlin’s “Weltspielplatz”, or world play area, have created a place at which children from throughout the world can meet to play, learn and grow together in peace. Some 7,000 m² in size, the three-dimensional adventure playground is located in Treptower Park and consists of many fantasy landscapes that the children have thought of themselves. Among the features ensuring protection against injuries in accordance with DIN EN 1177:2008 are soft-impact surfaces from Polytan.

Tailored to the 3.00 m critical drop height of the “Rocky Mountains” and “Skyscrapers” equipment in the “North America” section of the play area, Polytan installed a 130 mm-thick PolyPlay FS surface in the colours light grey and rainbow blue.

Climbing, skipping, sliding and crawling – with a large piece of yellow cheese in the “Europe” section, there’s plenty of room for imagination in the world play area. To ensure that the children here, too, are not exposed to the risk of serious injury if they fall, the ground was covered with a PolyPlay FS Nature surface. With a total thickness of 120 mm, the synthetic soft-impact surface is configured to the critical 2.50 m drop height from the giant toy cheese. This means that the elastic base layer of black recycled rubber granules is 105 mm thick, while the sand-filled pile layer has a depth of 15 mm.
