Polytan
artifical turf

Artificial turf systems from Polytan are high-tech products, assembled from various components depending on their intended use. Many clubs, cities, and municipalities rely on artificial turf because it can be played on in almost any weather and is also easy to maintain. It consists of an elastic base layer, the turf carpet, and the so-called infill. This filling of the turf carpet can consist of sand or a filling of sand and performance infill. Additionally, unfilled artificial turf systems for football sports are becoming increasingly common. The customer has free choice here.

Artificial Turf
Systems

The Polytan Anti-Compaction System (ACS) represents the precisely defined and optimal interaction between artificial turf surface, infill granulation, and elastic layer. The specific combination significantly defines the desired playing characteristics as well as the durability and longevity of the system.

Rasenfilamente

Turf Filaments

The turf filaments (turf fibers) tufted onto a carrier backing determine the protective and play characteristics of the turf system together with the infill and elastic layer. Smooth filaments are particularly soft and provide a natural playing experience with optimal ball roll and bounce characteristics. Turfs with textured filaments allow for intensive use with high availability and reduced maintenance and are ideal for publicly accessible or municipal sports facilities. In recent years, combinations of both filament types have become increasingly popular, combining the advantages of both.

Kunstrasen-Infills

Infills

Different infill materials ensure an authentic playing feel, grip, and traction during high-speed directional changes, clean ball roll, and high player safety depending on the system used. These infills include elastic rubber granules, natural fillers, or quartz sand. The infill material comprises one or two layers. The base layer for every pitch consists of mineral filler. A second layer of Performance Infill, such as cork, offers additional comfort and better shock absorption than pure sand. Professional hockey turfs are typically laid as unfilled turf carpets and require no infill due to high fiber density.

Elastische Tragschicht

Elastic Base Layer

Directly beneath the turf lies a 25-35 mm thick elastic layer made of rubber granules and a PU binder produced by Polytan. It ensures the long-lasting elasticity necessary for player safety and levels any unevenness in the ground due to its in-situ construction.

Elastic Layers – The Invisible Foundation for Enhanced Performance and Safety

A high-quality artificial turf system consists of more than just fibers and infill – the elastic layer plays a crucial role in durability, shock absorption, and playing quality. It reduces injury risks, ensures uniform force distribution, and optimizes ball behavior. Whether for football, hockey, or multi-sport facilities, the right elastic layer makes all the difference!

The right natural infill

Hardly anyone will deny that environmental protection must be taken into account when building sports facilities. Especially not in Germany, where, according to the Federal Institute for Sports Science, there is by far the highest number of synthetic turf pitches in the EU. The solution is mixtures with natural fillers, ‘which are not affected by the possible EU regulations’, according to the fact sheet of the German Olympic Sports Confederation. This is where Polytan plays to its innovative strengths. We offer a range of organic fillers that provide the best playing properties on a layer of sand as performance infill.

Cork

Cork is a lightweight natural raw material that is suitable as an infill for artificial turf sports pitches due to its excellent cushioning properties. In combination with a stabilising quartz sand layer, cork can be used in various RAL-certified artificial turf systems.

Brockfill

Artificial turf infilled with BrockFILL feels like natural turf and lies within the optimum traction range. The infill material made from wood chips fulfils the requirements of the FIFA quality programme for artificial turf systems and World Rugby, among others.

Mineral infill (sand)

Quartz sand is found in almost every artificial turf pitch - it stabilises the blades and protects the base fabric. The combination of an elastic base layer and a densely woven turf carpet ensures a high level of playing comfort. Artificial turf systems filled with sand can be supplemented with additional performance infills.

Biofusion

BioFusion - these are olive stones and cork in a unique mixing ratio. This means that the infill is 100% organic and also free from microplastics. It combines the advantages of both materials and compensates for the disadvantages. The result: an even infill with the perfect balance of elasticity, density, compactness, resistance and abrasion resistance.

FAQ Infill

Why do I need Infill?

The two main reasons are playing comfort and the stability of the blades. In addition to the elastic base layer, the infill provides the pitch with good cushioning and traction properties. The risk of injury is reduced and, depending on the infill, the running and bouncing properties of the ball are comparable to a natural grass pitch in good condition. The infill ensures that the turf carpet always straightens up and lies evenly even under high loads and does not become a flat carpet on which it is no longer possible to play properly, especially in the so-called stress zones such as the five-metre area or the centre circle.there are different types of infill: A pure sand infill is the cheapest and technically simplest form.

However, a court filled with sand does not offer the same playing comfort as a court with cork or granules as infill. Both are applied on top of the sand layer. The advantage of cork is that it offers significantly more cushioning comfort than a court filled purely with sand. However, cork is a very light material that can float up in heavy rain and then has to be returned to the court. Polytan prevents this floating thanks to a special weave of the carpet straws. The so-called texturisation means nothing more than a crimping of the stalks, which acts like a kind of net and prevents the cork from floating up. The third infill option is BrockFILL. The pitch is constructed in exactly the same way as a system backfilled with sand or sand and cork, i.e. an elastic, water-permeable layer on a gravel/crushed stone mixture, on which the shaving carpet is then laid.

Here too, a layer of sand is backfilled first, on which BrockFILL is then applied. It attracts water so that rainwater and condensation are absorbed by the particles. The stored moisture is gradually released for cooling. BrockFILL also increases in weight when wet, so that it does not float and is washed away from the sports facility during heavy rainfall. Artificial turf infilled with BrockFILL feels like natural turf and is within the optimum traction range. The infill material fulfils the requirements of the FIFA quality programme for artificial turf systems and World Rugby, among others.

‍

What happens to the discharged infill?

The following applies to all granules on Polytan pitches: If something is carried off the pitch, it can be swept up and scattered again or disposed of. Although the granules consist of 70 per cent natural raw materials and are absolutely non-toxic, they are legally considered microplastics. Regardless of which infill material our customers choose: With modern construction measures, we can protect the environment and maximise play comfort. With our innovative filter systems such as the Hauraton channel, we are able to reduce the discharge of granules into the environment to almost zero. It is also possible to replace the granules without having to replace the entire court.

Why do I not need infill for hockey turf?

Hockey pitches generally manage without infill. The turf is more densely woven and significantly shorter than football pitches and is therefore tailored to the requirements of the sport. However, Polytan now also offers football turf with less or no infill.

Possible Features

Year-round play thanks to turf heating

Polytan artificial turf pitches are significantly less sensitive and easier to maintain than natural grass pitches: They do not require rest periods and can be used all year round. However, snow, ice and ground frost are a constant source of problems - this can be remedied with a turf heating system.

Winter weather conditions such as snow, ice or severe frost can impair the playing properties of artificial turf systems and therefore also increase the risk of injury to players. When installing artificial turf systems in colder regions with frequent snowfall, it is therefore advisable to install a turf heating system. The turf heating system offered by Polytan with our partner AST Eis- u. Solartechnik GmbH is not only effective against snow and ice, but is also particularly efficient in terms of energy: unlike conventional systems, special heating mats are used which are installed directly underneath the elastic layer, thus enabling lower flow temperatures and significantly shorter reaction times. The heat loss of Polytan turf heating systems is also around 50 % lower than with conventional, deeper-laid pipe systems.

Logos and pitch surrounds

Artificial turf pitches are not only high-quality playing fields but, unlike natural turf, are also ideal for displaying club crests or logos. More and more clubs are also using artificial turf to supplement natural grass pitches at the edge of the pitch. The artificial turf pitch surround, starting from the touch and goal lines, offers interesting advantages compared to previous solutions: a natural-looking surface is also created outside the actual pitch, which significantly reduces the risk of injury during tackles and duels on the edge of the pitch. In addition, the side areas, which are often heavily used by the linesman, coaching zone and warm-up areas, are always in top condition both technically and visually. They therefore offer optimum playing conditions at all times for throw-ins and corners.

Furthermore, artificial turf offers an ideal surface for the presentation of club crests or logos of sponsors and advertising partners. Whether in the peripheral areas or directly on the pitch - the integration of multi-coloured logos guarantees attention and is a strong argument when acquiring sponsors!
